Ricky Tomlinson, at the height of his Jim Royle fame, starred as the ever-optimistic lower league football manager turned England’s savior at a time when the real England team was looking to the continent in Sven Goran Eriksson and playing some of the most memorable matches in the last 30 years. As we’ll hear, there were moments when art and life intertwined.
We delve deep into not only Mike Bassett but also the Royle Family and the film’s major inspiration, the groundbreaking documentary, The Impossible Job. But does this film work on any level if not being watched by someone who is already a football fan?
